Just a few years ago, electric vehicles (EVs) were almost nonexistent on Nepal’s roads. Today, the story is remarkably different. In 2023 alone, over 65% of all new cars sold in Nepal were electric, a number that puts the country far ahead of many developed nations in EV adoption.
Nepal's transition to clean mobility is nothing short of transformational and AirCharge is proud to be building the infrastructure that powers this progress.
The Policy That Sparked a Movement
In July 2021, Nepal’s government made a bold move by dramatically reducing import duties and excise taxes on EVs. The results were immediate and profound: electric vehicle sales soared, and public interest followed.
While taxes have slightly increased since then, EVs remain far more affordable than their fossil-fueled counterparts. With lower upfront costs and dramatically reduced running costs, EVs have become the smarter financial and environmental choice for individuals and businesses alike.
Why EVs Make Sense in Nepal
Fuel in Nepal is imported and expensive. In contrast, electricity—particularly renewable hydropower is locally generated, clean, and cheap. Charging an EV can cost up to 90% less than fueling a petrol or diesel vehicle.
It’s no surprise then that drivers are making the switch, especially when backed by strong incentives and a growing lineup of desirable EV models from various automobiles.
Enter AirCharge: Building the Charging Backbone
This EV revolution can only go as far as the infrastructure allows and that’s where AirCharge comes in.
We’re leading the charge by rapidly deploying a nationwide network of EV charging stations inside Nepal, tailored to meet the needs of both personal and commercial EV users. Our solutions range from high-speed DC chargers for highways and fleet operators to AC chargers designed for urban spaces and residential use.
Our mission is simple: to make EV ownership in Nepal seamless, practical, and worry-free.
Innovation Beyond the Plug
We’re not alone in driving innovation. AirCharge is actively collaborating with local entrepreneurs and tech partners to support and scale these technologies across the region.
Electrifying Public Transportation
Nepal’s EV momentum isn’t limited to personal vehicles. In 2023, Kathmandu’s cooperative bus service, Sajha Yatayat, introduced 40 new electric buses—with plans for 100 more. Backed by hydropowered charging stations, these buses cost 33 times less to operate than diesel buses, helping both the environment and the economy.
Cleaner Air, Healthier Cities
Nepal contributes just 0.027% to global greenhouse gas emissions. But the primary driver behind its EV push is air quality. Kathmandu’s unique geography traps pollutants, making air pollution a serious public health threat.
Every EV on the road means less black exhaust, cleaner air, and healthier communities—a mission that aligns perfectly with AirCharge’s vision for a cleaner future.
Looking Ahead: 2030 and Beyond
Nepal has set an ambitious goal: 90% of private four-wheeled vehicles to be electric by 2030. It’s a bold vision but one that’s entirely achievable with strong policy, public support, and reliable charging infrastructure.
At AirCharge, we’re more than just a technology provider. We’re a partner in Nepal’s clean energy journey.
